Making coffee at home can be not just a daily ritual, but a true art form. To achieve quality and tasty coffee, it’s important to follow several key rules, especially when it comes to brewing. Here are some simple tips on how to make a great cup of coffee without leaving your home.
Quality ingredients
Good coffee only needs two ingredients – coffee beans and water. Therefore, pay attention to their selection.
Choose quality coffee, which is recommended to be purchased not at mass retail locations but at specialized coffee shops that sell high-quality, organic coffee from carefully selected coffee farms. Opt for freshly roasted coffee beans; the fresher the roast, the better the coffee! Ideally, the beans should have been roasted no more than 2-3 weeks ago. The best properties of coffee are revealed within 4-8 weeks after roasting.
Another important ingredient is water. Its quality is not ideal everywhere for making coffee. If you’re using good beans but the result is still not satisfying, try using filtered water. Also, it is recommended not to use water that has already been boiled!
Water temperature – key to great taste
One of the most crucial factors in preparing coffee is the water temperature. Often, we mistakenly think that boiling water is best for coffee, but the ideal temperature for brewing is slightly lower. The optimal water temperature for coffee is between 90 and 95 degrees Celsius. This temperature efficiently extracts the aromas and flavors of coffee without losing the true taste of the coffee.
When water boils, it is recommended to wait about a minute before pouring it onto the coffee. This allows the temperature to drop to the recommended range, making the coffee smoother and richer in flavor.
Use a moka pot
1. Grind the coffee: Grind the coffee just before brewing to ensure it is more aromatic and flavorful. When using a moka pot, it’s recommended to grind the beans to a medium coarseness.
2. Add ground coffee to the filter: After grinding the beans, take the moka pot and unscrew its bottom – there you will find the filter. Fill the filter with coffee. It should be full, but the coffee should not be compressed.
3. Add water: After removing the filter, you’ll find an empty chamber at the bottom of the pot; fill this with just-boiled, hot water.
4. Place the moka pot on the stove: After filling the chamber with water, replace the filter and screw on the top part of the pot. Place the pot on the stove, set to medium heat, and wait until you hear bubbling; then remove the pot from the stove and pour the coffee into cups.
